Winter hiking in the mountains

The Wildkogel winter hiking trail, which connects the mountain stations of the Smaragdbahn, Wildkogelbahn and Gensbichlalmbahn lifts, leads through a wonderful winter-white paradise.

Regardless of where you start - whether from the top of the Wildkogelbahn or the Smaragdbahn - the magnificent panorama of the Hohe Tauern's numerous 3,000-metre peaks, and especially Salzburg's highest peak, the Großvenediger (3,657 m), will fascinate everyone.

The Wildkogel-Arena has more than 80 kilometres of winter hiking trails, each offering special sights and thrills. From lower level hiking trails to higher peaks, there is a challenge for everyone, tailored to their abilities.

For those who prefer easier hikes, we recommend the Wildkogel-Panorama, the Geisl-Hochalm hiking trail, which offers beautiful views while enjoying the mountain air during a pleasant walk.

For those who want to explore the mountains from higher elevations, the Chapel Trail is a fascinating experience, slightly more difficult with its 17.5 kilometres of trail, but worth it for the views and scenery. Specifically, the trail starts from the parish church in Neukirchen, and leads through Schloss Hohenneukirchen to the hamlet of Rosental and on to Sulzau.

We've added a button on the site where you can view all 62 winter hiking trails by difficulty, length, steepness and time frame.
